As part of the activities of the EU4EU Network, from 3 to 5 June 2026 the University of Cagliari, member of the EU4EU Italy Consortium, hosted an international Erasmus+ co-funded Staff Mobility on the theme “AI for Efficient and Sustainable International Relations Management”. The initiative was organised by Campus Iberus, coordinator of the EU4EU Spain Consortium, in collaboration with EuGen, coordinator of EU4EU Italy and International Coordinator of the EU4EU Network, and with the participation of the University of Lille and ISG, coordinators of the EU4EU France and EU4EU Portugal Consortia respectively.

The event built upon the work initiated during the previous EU4EU Staff Mobility held in Brussels in 2024, entitled “AI and Academia: Tuning Educational Programs with the Professional Skills of the Future”. While the Brussels edition explored the impact of artificial intelligence on higher education curricula and future skills development, the Cagliari mobility focused on the practical application of AI in the management of international relations and university internationalisation processes. Together, the two initiatives reflect the EU4EU Network’s commitment to supporting innovation and capacity building in higher education through European cooperation.

The event in Cagliari brought together 43 international relations professionals from 22 universities across Spain, France, Italy and Portugal, providing a valuable opportunity for professional development, the exchange of good practices and the strengthening of cooperation among institutions committed to internationalisation, student mobility and European collaboration in higher education.

The mobility opened with a welcome session led by Anna Maria Aloi, Head of ISMOKA at the University of Cagliari, and Carmen Ramón, International Mobility and Projects Coordinator at Campus Iberus. Their contributions set the stage for three days of training and exchange focused on the opportunities and challenges that artificial intelligence presents for higher education institutions.

Over the three days of the Staff Week, led by Dr Ana Isabel Gil, participants explored key topics including digital literacy, the ethical use of artificial intelligence, and multicultural support for exchange students. The programme also provided practical insights into the use of AI and digital tools for partner relationship management and the optimisation of international projects. Through interactive discussions and the exchange of experiences, participants reflected on the potential of AI as a strategic resource to improve operational efficiency, enhance service quality and support the development of more innovative and sustainable internationalisation strategies.

The programme also included activities aimed at introducing participants to the academic environment and cultural heritage of the University of Cagliari, creating additional opportunities for networking and fostering long-term professional relationships among colleagues from different countries and institutional contexts.

Moreover, one last session was led by Prof. Diego Reforgiato Recupero, full Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Cagliari, who provided a comprehensive overview of how artificial intelligence is understood today from a theoretical perspective.

The Staff Week concluded with a shared reflection on how to effectively apply artificial intelligence to internationalization, alongside the challenges and opportunities it presents for higher education. This initiative provided participants with concrete ideas and tools to drive the future development of university internationalization and international relations across Europe.
